WHAT:   The Academic Laboratory of Material Investigation of Paintings

The Academic Laboratory of Material Investigation of Paintings (ALMA). The lab is a joint center of Academy of Fine Arts Prague and the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences. It was founded in 2004 on the basis of long-term cooperation between the chemistry lab of the School of Restoration and this academic institution. ALMA focuses on material examination of colour layers, which is one of the components of a restoration examination, and it undertakes testing, evaluation, and development of methods of micro-analysis in the area of preservation of national cultural heritage. The staff of the lab also provides lectures for the students. In the courses of Chemistry I and II (RNDr. Hradílková), the students are introduced to the present trends of material examination, and they test the preparation of samples for traditional microscope observation, and the instrumental analytic methods. They visit science labs and learn to process the results of analytical surveys. A detailed professional description of the lab's activities is to be found at www.alma-lab.cz ALMA offers the possibility of leading students' thesis dealing with the practice of preparation of model samples of colour layers according to historical prescriptions, and their possible use in experimental material examination.

Projects of the lab:

  • Research objective 6046144603 (2005-2011) "Research of Historical Painting Techniques and Materials Necessary for the Restoration Process and Art-Historical Evaluation of Paintings"
  • Research project of the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (2004-2006) "Material and Micro-Structure Features in Evaluation of Date and Techniques of Paintings in Central Europe"

Projects in cooperation with other institutions:

  • With the MOLAB laboratory (University of Perugia nad National Institute of Applied Optics in Florence, Italy), and the Moravian Gallery in Brno (2005): “Painting Technique of Johann Baptist Lampi, Father and Son; Verification of their Authorship“
  • The Institute of Criminology in Prague (2005): "Complex Methodology of Non-Destructive Micro-Analysis of Colour Layers and Microscopic Marks"
